Membership of the Slovak Republic in the European Union (European Communities)
Adrián Tokár
The paper analyses the impact of the membership of the Slovak Republic in the European Union on the state sovereignty of the Slovak Republic. The author examines this issue on the basis of three sources. Firstly, the scope of powers to be transferred to the European Union is considered, that is those areas, in which the Slovak Republic shall not execute its sovereign rights anymore. Secondly, the question is to be answered as to what differences are between the decision-making processes within the European Union and the decision-making processes which take place in the Slovak Republic and whether these different processes can be considered equal in terms of state sovereignty. Finally, the chapter provides essential overview of so-called democratic deficit in the European Union, which can be understood as a certain modification of the principle of popular sovereignty.
